German auto giant Mercedes-Benz may well move on to assembling electric cars in India, the first for a luxury car maker, as the company plans to take benefit from the lower GST rate of 5% for green cars.

The company on Thursday drove in the EQC electric car at Rs 99.3 lakh (ex-showroom) and said that green mobility remains an opportunity, and the company is now exploring plans to increase its engagement in the area, especially as this is line with its global product plans.

“It makes sense to look at localisation. But the EQC can’t be produced here at the moment… we need bigger volumes, and will look at subsequent models (for local assembly),” Mercedes India MD & CEO Martin Schwenk said.
